Dear Mr. Stefansson:-
Crawford and I are about to start for Nome and
I am leaving this letter with Maurer to send to you should anything
unforseen happen to me. Of course I am not afraid of starving to
death or freezing (thanks to the things I have been taught by you)
but I am well aware that accidents are as liable to happen to one in
this country as well as on the "outside."

So if I "pass my checks" kindly send whatever
remuneration I am entitled to, to my mother or father at McMinnville,
and rest assured that I am ever grateful for the favors you have shown
me, and the opportunities that you have made for me.
