August 15th 1922.
Mr.V .Stefansson,
C/o American Geographical Society,
New York City.
My dear Stefansson:
I have duly received your several wires, concluding with your two dated Aug.13th from
^India^
Minneapolis. Immediately on receipt of these last two, we
got in touch with Mr.Harrison of the Union Bank, and arranged to transfer yesterday
$1500.00 to Loman Bros., at Nome. I immediately wired you as per confirmation
attached, and I hope that Loman Bros., may he
successful either in persuading our own men to remain another year at
Wrangel, or securing new men to take their
places.
Brown of the
Province asked me to suggest to you that if you had not already
concluded other arrangements, that you instruct Crawford immediately upon reaching Nome to wire Brown, Collect, a 500 word story, which Brown upon receiving in Vancouver, would edit and put on the wire to the various news
centres.
Brown of course would handle this
thoroughly well, and secure a maximum amount of desirable publicity, but it is
quite possible that you have already made other arrangements.
I am sorry you have had anxiety as a result of the dilatory methods at
Ottawa, but I am glad that at least
they have agreed to the grant of $3,000. Perhaps I should have made mention of a
larger amount in my wire to King, but I did
not wish to have the request turned down on the plea that it was extravagant,
and in any case the $3,000.00 will help a little.
There is nothing further to report here. I shall be glad when you have time to
write and tell me the result of your interviews at Ottawa, and the prospects for getting action in the matter of
the lease.
Yours sincerely,
^
