Dear Mr. Stefansson :
It is not a pleasure to inform you that the Teddy Bear arrived back in
Nome yesterday after an unsuccessful
attempt to reach Wrangel Island.
I am inclosing a copy of a letter from Joe Bernard, addressed to me, in which he gives an account
of his trip. Owing to the rush of business today, because of the sailing of
the boat, I am unable to go into further details, with reference to
the return of cargo etc.. In fact the crew of the Teddy Bear are busy at this
time discharging cargo and until it is checked up I could not furnish an
accurate report. This cannot be done until after the departure of the Victoria.
I do not know the amount of supplies etc. taken to Wrangel last year but presume that Knight and Maurer
will be able to keep the camp going.
This has been a most exceptional year and all boats going into the Arctic have met ice very far south. I believe
that it has extended south of East Cape
every month this summer and on this side has not been much more favorable.
I will send you a wire tonight but regret that it will contain no good news.
We hear frequently from Carl by wire and
his letters usually mention you so we feel that we are in touch. If I can
be of further serviee I will look forward to your instructions
Sincerely,
^
Ralph Lomen
