Dear Mr. Taylor:
I have just received, your letter of September 8th, and I am returning herewith the signed promissory note.
I think I shall be in a position to repay this note from my lecture earnings in December.
As I wired you, I do not understand Crawford's further demand for $2,000 to be sent to Nome, for I understood that the $1500. you sent him was for use in paying the charter fees of the vessel. On Crawford's arrival in Nome he found awaiting him something over $900., and I am unaware of any large necessary expenditures there except for chartering the boat. With the $1500. you sent him he has already received over $2,400.
If you have not already done so, I think you should wire, on the Company’s behalf, to Carl Lomen at Nome, asking for a brief statement of what the money is needed for and why the money Crawford already had did not suffice. I imagine Crawford took Lomen into his confidence in these matters. Of course we can merely request this information in a friendly way for Lomen has no official connection with us.
I suppose I shall be able to get the $2,000 somehow if it is needed, although I have some personal payments of my own coming on now, which makes it inconvenient.

Dear Stefansson,
I am in receipt of your wire of the 7th,and we wired you as per confirmation mailed to youlast night. We transferred yesterday to Crawford$1500. in American funds, which, with the $100. wehad sent a few days previously plus the exchange, amounted in all to $1788.00. I accordingly thoughtit well to borrow on your account $1000., which loanI was able to arrange through Mr. Anderson for ninetydays. I shall be glad if you will sign and returnto me the attached note.
The Company's account, therefore, standsas follows:-

Scroll Table to show more columns

Bal. at end of August - $ 561.13
Deposits from Mr.Stefansson and Mr. Anderson - 2,000.00 2,561.13
Funds wired to Crawford - 1,600.00
Exchange . . . . . . - 188.00 1,788.00
Balance in Union Bank - $ 773.13
It seems to me that we are not wise to allow the balance to run much below this figure, butour arrangement with Mr. Anderson on his loan is thatit can be repaid in part or in whole at any time within the ninety days period.
