To The People of God in England[place0068.ocp] Scotland[place0203.ocp] [& | and]&and Ireland[place0108.ocp] and all all who [deſire | desire]deſiredesire the Advancement of the Kingdom of the great Redeemer, [whereever | wherever]whereeverwherever, the Bearer, the [Rev.d | Rev.]Rev.dRev. [Nathl | Nathaniel]NathlNathaniel Whitaker[pers0037.ocp], [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall, by the Providence of God, have Opportunity to make known the important Errand on which he comes, I hope, Sufficiently recommended to Charitable Notice, and [Reſpect | respect]Reſpectrespect. Gentlemen and [Chriſtian | Christian]ChriſtianChristian Friends.
It is well known that there are yet remaining [vaſt | vast]vaſtvast Numbers of aboriginal Natives in this Land; whose Manner of living is Savage [almoſt | almost]almoſtalmost to a level with the [bruital | brutal]bruitalbrutal Crea‐‐tion; but [feirce | fierce]feircefierce and terrible in War. Their Dwellings are emi‐ ‐nently Habitations of Cruelty — they have continued, from Age to Age, in the [groſseſt | grossest]groſseſtgrossest [Paganizim | paganism]Paganizimpaganism and Idolatry — Strangers to all the Emoluments of Science — but Subtle and [ſkillfull | skillful]ſkillfullskillful in all the Arts of Cruelty [& | and]&and Deceit — and on every [Conſideration | consideration]Conſiderationconsideration their State is, perhaps, the [moſt | most]moſtmost wretched and piteous of all the [humane | human]humanehuman Race — They have, from the [firſt | first]firſtfirst planting of these Colonies, been a Scourge and Terror to their [Engliſh | English]EngliſhEnglish Neighbours — often ravaging and laying [waſt | waste]waſtwaste their [Fronteirs | frontiers]Fronteirsfrontiers — butchering, torturing, and [captiveting | captivating]captivetingcaptivating their Sons — [daſhing | dashing]daſhingdashing their Children [againſt | against]againſtagainst the Stones — Skillfully [deviſing | devising]deviſingdevising, and proudly glorying in, all [poſsible | possible]poſsiblepossible methods of Torture and Cruelty within their Power. [&c. | etc.]&c.etc.
And the [Conſideration | consideration]Conſiderationconsideration, that their being civilized, and taught the Knowledge of the only true God and Saviour, and [ſo | so]ſoso made good Members of Society, and [peacible | peaceable]peaciblepeaceable and quiet Neighbours ( which cannot be Effected byut by introducing the Gospel among them) is of such [vaſt | vast]vaſtvast importance to the Crown of great Britain[place0090.ocp], the Peace and [Proſperity | prosperity]Proſperityprosperity of our Land — and [eſpecially | especially]eſpeciallyespecially to their own good and [Hapineſs | happiness]Hapineſshappiness in Time and to Eternity; Moved me, about eleven years ago, to erect a charity School[org0098.ocp] in order for the Educat‐ing the [moſt | most]moſtmost [promiſing | promising]promiſingpromising of their own Sons that might be obtained, with a view to their being [imployed | employed]imployedemployed as [Miſsionaries | missionaries]Miſsionariesmissionaries [& | and]&and School — [maſters | masters]maſtersmasters among their [reſpective | respective]reſpectiverespective Tribes; together with a number of
of [Engliſh | English]EngliſhEnglish Youth, to be [ſent | sent]ſentsent forth as Companions and [Aſsociates | associates]Aſsociatesassociates with them in the Same [Buſineſs | business]Buſineſsbusiness. And the good Behaviour of the Boys which I have hitherto had in this School; and their Proficiency in Learning, has been Such, by the [Bleſsing | blessing]Bleſsingblessing of God, upon [Inſtruc‐‐tion | instruc‐tion]Inſtruc‐‐tioninstruc‐tion and [Diſcipline | discipline]Diſciplinediscipline, that many Gentlemen of Character [& | and]&and note both at Home, and abroad, have Seen fit to encourage the [Deſign | design]Deſigndesign by Such Liberalities, as have Supported it hitherto with‐out any Fund for that Purpose.
But the [neceſsary | necessary]neceſsarynecessary [Expences | expenses]Expencesexpenses for the Support of Such a number as are now [imployed | employed]imployedemployed in the [Wilderneſs | wilderness]Wilderneſswilderness at the [Diſtance | distance]Diſtancedistance of three or four Hundred Miles, viz three [Miſsionaries | missionaries]Miſsionariesmissionaries Eight School Masters, and two Interpreters, [occaſionally | occasionally]occaſionallyoccasionally hired to that Service, and where they can have little or no [Aſsiſtance | assistance]Aſsiſtanceassistance towards their Support, from the Savages among whom they live. Together with the [neceſsary | necessary]neceſsarynecessary Supplies for the School which now [conſiſts | consists]conſiſtsconsists of Twenty; and others expected Soon, who are of Families of Importance in Tribes Still more remote, Are greater than can be [reaſonably | reasonably]reaſonablyreasonably expected from these American Colonies, [eſpecially | especially]eſpeciallyespecially at a Time when complaints of Debt; and want of Money are So loud, and [univerſal | universal]univerſaluniversal. But [conſidering | considering]conſideringconsidering that this great undertaking looks with [ſuch | such]ſuchsuch a favourable and [incouraging | encouraging]incouragingencouraging [Aſpect | aspect]Aſpectaspect, and that a wider Door, than ever is now open for the Furtherance of it, by sending [Miſsionaries | missionaries]Miſsionariesmissionaries, and [school Maſters | schoolmasters]school Maſtersschoolmasters further among Tribes where none have heretofore been; I am not only [neceſsitated | necessitated]neceſsitatednecessitated but [incouraged | encouraged]incouragedencouraged that to [repreſent | represent]repreſentrepresent the [Caſe | case]Caſecase, and [imploy | employ]imployemploy my dear, [& | and]&and faithful Brother the [Rev.d | Rev.]Rev.dRev. [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. Whitaker[pers0037.ocp], in my Stead to [beſpeak | bespeak]beſpeakbespeak the charitable [Aſsiſtance | assistance]Aſsiſtanceassistance of the Friends of Zion abroad. And I am confident that numbers and all according to their Ability, who have at Heart, that which the Heart of the great Redeemer is infinitely Set upon. viz. the [Inlargement | enlargement]Inlargementenlargement of his Kingdom and the Salvation of the [periſhing | perishing]periſhingperishing Souls of men, [illegible]will be ready to [conſider | consider]conſiderconsider of, and forward to [aſsiſt | assist]aſsiſtassist, in this so [intereſting | interesting]intereſtinginteresting Affair, if they believe that I am not [aſking | asking]aſkingasking for
[myſelf | myself]myſelfmyself, but am only begging an Alms for [Chriſt | Christ]ChriſtChrist, and in a [Caſe | case]Caſecase of no [leſs | less]leſsless [neceſsity | necessity]neceſsitynecessity than that. (if not the very same) which he is [pleaſed | pleased]pleaſedpleased to [repreſent | represent]repreſentrepresent, and [expreſs | express]expreſsexpress by his being an [hungred | hungered]hungredhungered, and [thirſty | thirsty]thirſtythirsty, and naked, and Sick, and in [Priſon | prison]Priſonprison, and that he will even in this Life bountifully requite those who contribute Supplies for these his [neceſsities | necessities]neceſsitiesnecessities, and reward and honour them at [laſt | last]laſtlast with a come ye [bleſsed | blessed]bleſsedblessed of my Father inherit the Kingdom prepared for you.
And whatever any [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall [pleaſe | please]pleaſeplease to contribute for this Purposes I shall receive as [ſacred | sacred]ſacredsacred to the Redeemers [Cauſe | cause]Cauſecause, and [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall improve it to the [aforſd | aforesaid]aforſdaforesaid uses according to my [beſt | best]beſtbest Ability, and by the [beſt | best]beſtbest Advices and I hope that all Friends, and Benefactors to this [Deſign | design]Deſigndesign, will have [Occaſion | occasion]Occaſionoccasion for the [moſt | most]moſtmost [eaſie | easy]eaſieeasy and comfor‐‐table Reflections, that their Charities were [beſtowed | bestowed]beſtowedbestowed in the [beſt | best]beſtbest manner for the Glory of God and the Good of men, for which Purpose I [beſpeak | bespeak]beſpeakbespeak the Prayers of all who truly [deſire | desire]deſiredesire the [Proſperity | prosperity]Proſperityprosperity of Zion.
