[note (type: abstract): Wheelock writes to Whitefield about first Occom's mission to the Oneidas, and about the difficulties of teaching Indian students. He mentions the idea of appealing to the Earl of Dartmouth for charity.][note (type: handwriting): Handwriting is small and cramped, with several deletions and additions.][note (type: paper): Paper appears to have minimal creasing, staining and wear, yet overall condition is difficult to assess due to the paper being completely encased in protective covering.][note (type: ink): Dark brown][note (type: noteworthy): The letter is noted as a copy. Some contents are similar to those of 761515. The abbreviation "proc." at the bottom of one verso is an abbreviation for "proclamation money," a term that described colonial currency the value of which was set at the currently imposed rate determined by a royal proclamation issued by Queen Anne in 1704, passed into law by parliament in 1707.]

I hope you have [recd | received]recdreceived mine from [Boſton | Boston]BoſtonBoston [place0013.ocp] [laſt | last]laſtlast May, [incloſing | enclosing]incloſingenclosing a letter of Thanks to the ^[above] noble^noble [Marqueſs | Marquess]MarqueſsMarquess of [Lothain | Lothian]LothainLothian [pers0355.ocp] for £50 Sterling which I [rec.d | received]rec.dreceived of [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. Smith[pers0497.ocp]. It came at a Time when it was much needed and I dont know how to [expreſs | express]expreſsexpress my Gratitude [ſuitably | suitably]ſuitablysuitably either to God or man. I [preſume | presume]preſumepresume his good [Lordſhip | Lordship]LordſhipLordship[pers0355.ocp] wants nothing ^[above] in return^in return more than I can readily give that is, the [fulleſt | fullest]fulleſtfullest [aſsurance | assurance]aſsuranceassurance that it was received thankfully, and [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall be improved in the [beſt | best]beſtbest manner I am able for the furtherance of the great [Deſign | design]Deſigndesign of [ſpreading | spreading]ſpreadingspreading the Gospel among the poor Indians.
[M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. Occom[pers0030.ocp] the Indian [Miniſter | minister]Miniſterminister went from hence on a [Miſſion | mission]Miſſionmission to the Oneida Indians[org0075.ocp], at the Motion & Direction of a number of Gentlemen in New York[place0166.ocp] Government, on the [10th | 10th]10th10th of [Laſt | last]Laſtlast month. David Fowler[pers0155.ocp] one of my Indian [Schollars | scholars]Schollarsscholars accompanied him in order to obtain if he could, and bring hither to this School[org0098.ocp] [ſix | six]ſixsix Boys of the Six Nations[org0090.ocp] to be :fitted as [ſoon | soon]ſoonsoon as [poſsible | possible]poſsiblepossible for Interpreters or [Miſsionaries | missionaries]Miſsionariesmissionaries. Three of the Six are at the [Expence | expense]Expenceexpense of the [Scotiſh | Scottish]ScotiſhScottish [Com̅iſs.n | Commissioners]Com̅iſs.nCommissioners [org0011.ocp] in [Boſton | Boston]BoſtonBoston [place0013.ocp]; the other Three I take in addition to the Six Boys now with me, at my own [Riſque | risk]Riſquerisk. The Journey which David[pers0155.ocp] is upon if he goes to the [Seenecas | Senecas]SeenecasSenecas[org0088.ocp] is about 500. miles. 1200 Miles he will ride in our [Wilderneſs | wilderness]Wilderneſswilderness if he [accompliſhes | accomplishes]accompliſhesaccomplishes what he purposed when he [ſet | set]ſetset out. The Lord mercifully [preſerve | pre-serve]preſervepre-serve him and make his way [proſperous | prosperous]proſperousprosperous. I have heard nothing from them [ſince | since]ſincesince they left me. But I heard a few Day ago that one of the Oneida Indians[org0075.ocp] had [killd | killed]killdkilled a Dutchman, and that the whole Tribe were moving off under [Apprehenſion | apprehension]Apprehenſionapprehension that the [Engliſh | English]EngliſhEnglish will [riſe | rise]riſerise and cut them off.
There is among [ſeveral | several]ſeveralseveral Tribes near [Seſquaanna | Susquehanna]SeſquaannaSusquehanna River[place0206.ocp]. a very great concern, and [Deſire | desire]Deſiredesire to be taught the way of Salvation by [Chriſt | Christ]ChriſtChrist. and [ſuch | such]ſuchsuch a Door open to preach the Gospel among them as never was before, if we could find any way to [com̅u-nicate | communicate]com̅u-nicatecommunicate it to them. The London [Com̅iſsrs | commissioners]Com̅iſsrscommissioners in [Boſton | Boston]BoſtonBoston[org0095.ocp] have appointed [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. Amos [Thompſon | Thompson]ThompſonThompson [pers0538.ocp] [Miſsionary | missionary]Miſsionarymissionary, [& | and]&and [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. [Eliſha | Elisha]EliſhaElisha Gunn[pers0020.ocp] Interpreter to the Tribe at [Onohoquagke | Onohoquage]OnohoquagkeOnohoquage[place0182.ocp], on [S.d | said]S.dsaid River[place0206.ocp], and [beſides | besides]beſidesbesides him I know not of one [ſuitable | suitable]ſuitablesuitable for the [Buſineſs | business]Buſineſs business of Interpreter, nor is he a thorough [Maſter | master]Maſtermaster of their Language.
There is a [vaſt | vast]vaſtvast deal to be done, and at [preſent | present]preſentpresent it [ſeems | seems]ſeemsseems it [muſt | must]muſtmust be done by [perticular | particular]perticularparticular [Perſons | persons]Perſonspersons. Our Government have done nothing yet, nor do I hear of any Proposals of a [publick | public]publickpublic Nature in Favour of the Indians. The [Diſpoſition | disposition]Diſpoſitiondisposition of a great number [ſeems | seems]ſeemsseems to be rather to [riſe | rise]riſerise and cut them all off, than to do any thing to [ſave | save]ſavesave their Souls. nothing can be done without money, and our people complain much of the weight of ^[left] our^our charges of late years.
My School[org0098.ocp] is in a growing State; though but one of the Girls which
which I have been [ſo | so]ſoso long expecting is yet come. nor have I heard a word from [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. Brainerd [pers0004.ocp] [ſince | since]ſincesince [laſt | last]laſtlast Fall, when he informed me that the Girls were detained by [Sickneſs | sickness]Sickneſssickness, but might be expected early this Spring.
I have taken a pious youth[pers0315.ocp] Son to the Rev. [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. Kirtland[pers0942.ocp] of Norwich[place0174.ocp] into this School[org0098.ocp] as a Charity [Schollar | scholar]Schollarscholar; who is fitting as [faſt | fast]faſtfast as he can to accompany my Indian Boys on a [Miſsion | mission]Miſsionmission to [diſtant | distant]diſtantdistant Tribes as [ſoon | soon]ſoonsoon as they are fit for it. he and they [deſign | design]deſigndesign to learn the Languages of the [ſix | six]ſixsix nations[org0090.ocp], of the Boys which David[pers0155.ocp] is gone for if they [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall come.
None know, nor can any, without Experience, well conceive of, the Difficulty of Educating an Indian. They would [ſoon | soon]ſoonsoon kill [themſelves | themselves]themſelvesthemselves with Eating and Sloth, if [conſtant | constant]conſtantconstant care [weres | wares]wereswares not [exerciſed | exercised]exerciſedexercised for them at [leaſt | least]leaſtleast the [firſt | first]firſtfirst year — they are used to [ſet | set]ſetset upon the Ground, and it is as natural for them as a [ſeat | seat]ſeatseat to our children — they are not wont to have any [Cloaths | clothes]Cloathsclothes but what they wear, nor will they without much Pains be [bro.t | brought]bro.tbrought to take Care of any. — They are used to a Sordid Manner of [Dreſs | dress]Dreſsdress, and love it as well as our Children to be clean. — They are not used to any Regular Government, the [ſad | sad]ſadsad [Conſequences | con-sequences]Conſequencescon-sequences of Which You may a little [gueſs | guess]gueſsguess at — they are used to live from Hand to Mouth (as we Speak) and have no care for Futurity — they have never been used to the Furniture of an [Engliſh | English]EngliſhEnglish House, and dont know but that a wine [glaſs | glass]glaſsglass is as Strong as an Hand Iron — our Language [gap: tear][guess (h-dawnd): when]when they Seem to have got it is not their Mother Tongue and they cannot receive nor communicate in that as in their Own. — It is a long time before they will learn the proper Place [& | and]&and use of the Particles. A, an, the [&c. | etc.]&c.etc. and they are as [unpoliſhed | unpolished]unpoliſhedunpolished [& | and]&and uncultivated within as without. however Experience has taught us that it may be done. and they be as open to Conviction of the Truth of their State, when proper matter of Conviction is [com̅unicated | communicated]com̅unicatedcommunicated to them as any, and there is as much Ground to hope for their [Converſion | conversion]Converſionconversion. and I am [ſtill | still]ſtillstill of Opinion that the Time of Gods Mercy to them is now near at Hand.
May'n't I, my Dear Sir, look upon the generous Grant of the [Marqueſs | Marquess]MarqueſsMarquess of [Lothain | Lothian]LothainLothian [pers0355.ocp] as an [Earniſt | earnest]Earniſtearnest of further and greater Benefits to the great [Deſign | design]Deſigndesign. You will [eaſily | easily]eaſilyeasily [beleive | believe]beleivebelieve [he | the]hethe weight of Change is heavy upon me. It is now almost Seven years [ſince | since]ſincesince I began with two, and above four years I have had four and the [moſt | most]moſtmost of the Time five [& | and]&and Six, and now Eight upon my Hands ^[above] as^as [conſtantly | con-stantly]conſtantlycon-stantly devoted to School as their Health will allow. and if all come which I now expect, I [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall have Eighteen, male, [& | and]&and [feemale | female]feemalefemale who will live only on the Charities of Such as [Deſire | desire]Deſiredesire the enlargement of the Redeemers Kingdom.
The [Honle | Honourable]HonleHonourable London [Com̅iſsrs | Commissioners]Com̅iſsrsCommissioners [org0095.ocp] have made [ſeveral | several]ſeveralseveral Grants for my Help. and [laſt | last]laſtlast fall ^[above] they^they settled £20. proc. [p.r | per]p.rper annum upon this School[org0098.ocp]; which with the private Donations I have had have enabled me to Scrabble along hitherto.
The [Scotiſh | Scottish]ScotiſhScottish [Com̅iſsrs | Commissioners]Com̅iſsrsCommissioners [org0011.ocp] have but little to do with at [preſent | present]preſentpresent; [illegible]The [firſt | first]firſtfirst Laying out of that new formed [Com̅iſsion | Commission]Com̅iſsionCommission is for the Support of the Three Boys before mentioned. I hope they will [ſoon | soon]ſoonsoon be enabled to do [ſomething | something]ſomethingsomething greater. nor was that received from the Society[org0096.ocp] but [y.e | the]y.ethe [contribu.n | contribution]contribu.ncontribution of [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. [W.m | William]W.mWilliam [Hyſlop | Hyslop]HyſlopHyslop [pers0274.ocp] one of [y.r | their]y.rtheir [membrs | members]membrsmembers. they hope [ſoon | soon]ſoonsoon to be enabled by [y.e | the]y.ethe Society[org0096.ocp] to do something greater. I hear
I hear that a large number of Captives whom the Indians have taken at one time [& | and]&and place [& | and]&and another are lately brought into Albany[place0001.ocp]; among which there are 29. who have [forgotan | forgotten]forgotanforgotten their Names and the Place they were taken from, and it cant as yet be known what Family they are of. I have a mind, if it may be, to [chuſe | choose]chuſechoose out a number of them for an Education for our Purpose in this School[org0098.ocp].
There is a religious youth[pers0714.ocp] of about 14 Years old of The Tribe at Farmington[org0044.ocp], who has learnt to read [& | and]&and can [ſpeak | speak]ſpeakspeak [Engliſh | English]EngliſhEnglish, who has a great [Thirſt | thirst]Thirſtthirst for Learning, and appears to be very Sprightly: his Mother brought him hither while I was at Boston[place0013.ocp] [laſt | last]laſtlast may,[1760-05] with Hopes [y.t | that]y.tthat I would take him into this School[org0098.ocp]. what [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall I do for him?
If I knew how to [addreſs | address]addreſsaddress the Earl of Dartmouth[pers0153.ocp] ([whoſe | whose]whoſewhose Name among the Religious Part of our Country is like precious [Oyntment | ointment]Oyntmentointment) I would pray his [Lordſhip | Lordship]LordſhipLordship[pers0153.ocp] to [conſider | consider]conſiderconsider, among the many objects of his Charity, the [vaſt | vast]vaſtvast Swarms in this Land who are [periſhing | perishing]periſhingperishing for Lack of knowledge and that the [Expence | expense]Expenceexpense of getting the Gospel among them [muſt | must]muſtmust needs be very great, their Different Languages being [almoſ[gap: worn_edge][guess (h-dawnd): t]t | almost]almoſ[gap: worn_edge][guess (h-dawnd): t]talmost as numerous as their Tribes. and no Books to [aſsiſt | assist]aſsiſtassist in learning them — and few or none [ſkillful | skillful]ſkillfulskillful enough to be their Interpreters, [eſpecially | especially]eſpeciallyespecially in matters of Religion. nor any except [ſome | some]ſomesome low lived ignorant, [& | and]&and commonly [vitious | vicious]vitiousvicious Persons who have been their Captives — I would also urge upon his [Lordſhip | Lordship]LordſhipLordship[pers0153.ocp], that divine Providence has now opened the Door wide for that purpose. and great numbers, by the [illegible] [Rumours | ru-mors]Rumoursru-mors they have heard, are ^[above] now^now [perſwaded | persuaded]perſwadedpersuaded there is [ſomething | something]ſomethingsomething to be known which nearly concerns them and are very [deſirious | desirous]deſiriousdesirous to be taught — I would also urge ^[above] [w.t | what]w.twhat his [Ldſhp | Lordship]LdſhpLordship[pers0153.ocp] has [ſo | so]ſoso often [tho't | thought]tho'tthought of^[w.t | what]w.twhat his [Ldſhp | Lordship]LdſhpLordship[pers0153.ocp] has [ſo | so]ſoso often [tho't | thought]tho'tthought of that the Heart of the # great Redeemer is infinitely Set upon it, and [illegible] ^[above] [conſequently | consequently]conſequentlyconsequently ^[conſequently | consequently]conſequentlyconsequently an offering to this Purpose [muſt | must]muſtmust needs be acceptable to him. and ^[above] methinks^methinks I [ſhould | should]ſhouldshould [feal | feel]fealfeel quite bold in the [Cauſe | cause]Cauſecause, for it is none of my own, more than his. and I know if his [Lordſhip | Lordship]LordſhipLordship[pers0153.ocp] believes these things, he [muſt | must]muſtmust have a Heart very Different from his Character if it be not ^[above] disposed to^disposed to moved with [Compaſsion | compassion]Compaſsioncompassion towards them [illegible]. yea I am not afraid to rely upon his [Lordſhips | Lordships]LordſhipsLordships[pers0153.ocp] Candour if you [ſhall | shall]ſhallshall think fit to [ſhew | show]ſhewshow him what I have wrote.
as to an Incorporation for this Purpose when I went to Boston[place0013.ocp] I had in view [ſomething | something]ſomethingsomething Relative thereto. but found there that a number of the Principle men in [Boſton | Boston]BoſtonBoston [place0013.ocp] viz. We had an [acco.t | account]acco.taccount of your Death in the [publick | public]publickpublic Prints. [M.r | Mr.]M.rMr. Pomeroy[pers0432.ocp] was well the [laſt | last]laſtlast time I heard from him but from Home and full of [Buſineſs | business]Buſineſsbusiness.
