Catawba Indians
South Carolina
The Catawbas are a Siouan tribe located in South Carolina. They fought against the French, Spanish, Cherokee, and English on behalf of Anglo-American colonists throughout the colonial period. Warfare and smallpox devastated Catawba numbers, and the tribe faced increasing encroachment from Americans. Nevertheless, the Catawbas remained in South Carolina and still live there today. George Whitefield, a very famous Anglican New Light who supported Wheelock, was involved in missionary efforts to the Catawbas, though Wheelock’s missionaries were not.
