Date27 August, 1767

ms number766477

abstractShattock writes that he would like to come to Wheelock’s school. He also recommends his brother John as a potential pupil.

handwritingHandwriting is formal and clear.

paperLarge sheet folded in half to make four pages is in fair-to-good condition, with moderate staining and wear. Much of the wax seal remains. There is some separation at the creases.

noteworthyIn the fifth line of the letter's first paragraph, the meaning of the world "clostly" is uncertain. Handwriting is the same as on 765566.1, 767115.1, 767351.1, 767552, 767559, 767562.2, 767630.2, 767660.2, and possibly 767231, 767251 and 768371.2. It is likely that of Edward Deake, schoolmaster at Charlestown.

signatureThe letter is signed “Toby Shaddick,” a variant spelling of his name, which is spelled yet another way in the trailer.

Modernized Version Deletions removed; additions added in; modern spelling and capitalization added; unfamiliar abbreviations expanded.
