Description

The Yale Corporation is the governing body of Yale University. At present, it is relatively small, made up of 19 members — including the the President of the University, 10 Successor Trustees, six Alumni fellows, and the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Connecticut — but plays an active role in planning and setting policies. In 1771, when David Avery wrote to Wheelock about appointing a speaker from the "Reverend Corporation" to give the sermon at his ordination, the members were probably all or mostly ministers known to Wheelock, who graduated from Yale and kept close ties with the institution.
