Revd Rev. and kind Sir; with humility, Gratitude and Love, I sit my self down to write to your worthy Per&slong;on person . through the goodne&slong;s goodness of the great God of mercy I, and my little family are in health; and I hum bly hope that by the same goodne&slong;s goodness you and yours have been, and Still are in health, and pro&slong;perity prosperity . — kind Sir, I have ever retained your worthy Per&slong;on Person in my mind with plea&slong;ure pleasure , since, I have had the honour of being aquainted acquainted with you. and I ble&slong;s bless the Lord in whom I humbly hope, I have been enabled by his own divine grace, to put my whole Trust, that he hath has graciously given me such a Good & and real Earthly friend in time of need as your worthy Per&slong;on person hath has been, and I hope still will be. — if I was not Satisfy d satisfied in my Mind, of your good will to me ward and to my poor de&slong;pi&slong;ed despised Brethren I should not trouble you with my Scribles scribbles but now with plea&slong;ure pleasure I write to you as unto the be&slong;t best friend or Benefactor that I have in this world of trial, Sorrow and wants trialand various vici&slong;itudes vicissitudes . I heartily thank you for all your Tokens of Love, pity, and re&slong;pects respects that you shewed showed to me ward, toward me, and to ward my poor brethren, when I was in the city of New York and I daily ble&slong;s bless the Lord that he gave me favour in the Eyes and hearts of his People there, God full well knew my nece&slong;situous necessitous Circum&slong;tances circumstances , and there he mercifully relieved me, and greatly encouraged me to go on still, in his Service, wherever he in his Providence should call me. and not to &slong;tagger stagger . — verily, verily, I have abundant rea&slong;on reason to rejoice in the goodne&slong;s goodness of the Lord, who regardeth regards the cau&slong;e cause of tho&slong;e those that trust in his holy Name. — O that I might be enabled to live to his prai&slong;e praise all my Days, and afterward, be graciously recieved received up into Glory, where I shall prai&slong;e praise him throughout the endle&slong;s endless Ages of Eternity without inturruption interruption , and without cea&slong;ing ceasing Amen. — Revd Rev. Sir, I got safely home by the 5th 5th of January and found all well. I preached four times by the way. 3 times at New haven, once at Ea&slong;t East haven, but It is not the Cu&slong;tom custom I percieve perceive in these parts con&slong;ider consider of a traveling labourer, however, I am thankfull thankful that my mind is not chiefly set upon the things of time and Sense. and so am not disappointed, nor in the lea&slong;t least disquieted. I have been to several Towns of my Indian Brethren since I have been at home, and have consulted with them, about worldly affairs, and I have also preached to them al&slong;o also the Go&slong;pel Gospel of our Lord Je&slong;us Jesus the Christ. — my Indian brethren seems to be really engaged to go On in pro&slong;ecution prosecution of the De&slong;ign design which I made known to you when I was at your Re&slong;idence residence — and we do fully purpo&slong;e purpose if god willing to set of off from hence or from these Parts by the 13th 13th of March next . I take it for granted and I believe that there will be upwards of 560 young men from the several Tribes who will go with Re&slong;olution resolution into the we&slong;tern western Country, as first Set ­tlers of the Land granted to us by the Onoidas Oneidas . — however there is 58 able working men that purpo&slong;es purposes to go from the following Tribes. in who&slong;e whose words I believe we may rely. from Mohegan 10. from Naragan&slong;et Narragansett 20. from Montauk Montaukett on Long I&slong;land Island 13, from Nihantuck Niantic 5. from farm ington 10. and there is two other Tribes who confe&slong;s confess that they are So deeply involved in debt that they cannot go this Sea&slong;on season , but fully purpo&slong;es purposes to go soon as po&slong;sible possible . that is grotton Groton and Stonington. — I was there last thur&slong;day Thursday and had conference with them about the affair and I &slong;hall shall go their there again next Saturday, and tarry over the Sabbath with them. and I shall propo&slong;e propose conditions and I believe that there will be a small number from tho&slong;e those two Tribes. the Revd Rev. M.r Mr. Occom will Preach there next Sabbath. and he will propo&slong;e propose condition to them and their Creditors so as they may go and take Po&slong;se&slong;s possess ion with the Re&slong;t rest of us. I hope that their there will be nigh seventy in the whole tho though it is little uncertain Poverty hinders many it is thought the be&slong;t best way in the first Place forYoung men that are able to endure hard&slong;hips hardships to go and work or br the way through, or prepear prepare a Sort of Shelter for them&slong;elves themselves and the to live in, and to rai&slong;e raise little Some what somewhat to eat for them and and after wfoundation is laid the aged men and womenthen we can with le&slong;s less difficulty and children move up with our families, and the may the aged Men, and women go leaning upon their Sons as Ancors anchors I feel really engaged on my Part, and greatly encouraged. The pro­ ­&slong;pects prospects of great future good to my poor brethren in these parts, and al&slong;o also tho&slong;e those that inhabit the we&slong;tern western wilderne&slong;s wilderness animates my Soul to pre&slong;s press forward. I greatly de&slong;ire desire the Pro&slong;perity prosperity of my sinking Nation. — O that I might by the Grace of God, be beneficial to the bodies, but to the precious, exceeding precious Souls of my poor indian Brethren. — Revd Rev. and kind Sir. — I would further enform inform you that I recieved received a Letter from my Hond Honoured Patron the Revd Rev. Eleazer Eleazar Wheelock D. D and Pre&slong;ident President of Dartmouth College the 13th 13th of this Instant. the Extract of which I send you with even every word. — Dartmouth College Jany January 23. 1775. My dear Jo&slong;eph Joseph John&slong;on Johnson &c etc. : &c etc. : — — — I had a favoura ble oppertunity opportunity to return an An&slong;wer answer , the next Day. — I acquainted him how the Lord had pro&slong;pered prospered me New York and had given me friends there. and made Mention of your worthy Per&slong;on person good will towards me, and al&slong;o also to wards and what you towards my Poor Brethren. — I enformed informed him that you de&slong;igned designed to try to get &slong;ome some Thing for meMy Support And for my Encouragements from the Honorable Board at Philadelphia, or New York, I was not certain, — ever I de&slong;ired desired him to write soon as po&slong;sible possible to your worthy Per&slong;on person on my behalf, and recommend me to notice, and regard if I was de&slong;erving deserving . I wrote to enformed informed him, that the BHonorable Board would meet by the first of April. — and I doubt not, but that he will write to you But let The Lords will be done concerning that Matter. I doubt not but that you will do your uttermo&slong;t uttermost to get me a Support. while I shall be in the service of our Lord. If I have encouragement from that Honorable Board I will ble&slong;s bless the Lord, and rejoice in his goodne&slong;s goodness , if not I will still love, and trust in his holy Name, and service him with all my might. and not be discouraged, nor repine. for he will do the thing, that is right with me and for me. — my Purpo&slong;es purposes and nece&slong;situous necessitous Circum&slong;tances circumstances I'll write on other Paper by itself. — O kind Sir, ever Pray for me, that the God of Love, would give me Grace Sufficient for me. give my Thanks, and becoming Re&slong;pects Respects to your honoured, Beloved, and kind Con&slong;ort Consort and great regards to all your family. and love to all enquiring inquiring friends
