Wheelock's hand is relatively formal and clear. Single sheet is in good-to-fair condition, with light-to-moderate staining, creasing, and wear. Brown ink is faded in spots. Manuscript 772316.1 is a copy of this letter.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

I have lately received a Long Letter from our great Friend Esq.r Esq. Thornton, in which he expre&slong;ses expresses his wonted affection and tender Regard for your comfort as well as usefulne&slong;s usefulness and Seems to have his Heart open for your Releif relief .

I have wrote him of the Appointment of Me&slong;srs Messrs. Maccluer McClure & and Fri&slong;bie Frisbie to a mi&slong;sion mission on m Mu&slong;kingham Muskingum , about 100 miles we&slong;t west of Fort Pitts Pitt and that I would write you & and propo&slong;e propose to you to accompany them to a Tribe of Indians not far from Mu&slong;kingham Muskingum who Speak your language. It will be very agreable agreeable to the&slong;e these young Gentlemen to have your Company as far as your way will lie together on their Mi&slong;sion mission , and I doubt not but it will also be very agreable agreeable to the Mi&slong;sionary missionary whom the Board of Corri&slong;pondents Correspondents in the Jer&slong;ies New Jersey Shall Send to accompany them under the Patronage of which Board these young men are to proceed, who&slong;e whose Patronage and a&slong;si&slong;tance assistance I will aillegiblelso be&slong;peak bespeak for you. and you Shall have the Same Reward as Shall be allowed to one of the&slong;e these .

And if you will take your Brother David with you and imploy employ him as a School ma&slong;ter schoolmaster , I will give him at the Rate of £50. lawful Money p.r per Annum all the while he is in that Service till 'til he can make a Settlement among them and after that as rea&slong;on reason and his nece&slong;sities necessities &slong;hall shall require.

I expect the&slong;e these Young Gentlemen will Set out within a month. M.r Mr. Spencer a Comittee committee from that Board left me about 27.th 27th of April in order to meet the Synod at Philadelphia, with de&slong;ign design to obtain M.r Mr. Duffield to accompany them in case M.r Mr. Brainerd Should not be able, who was taken Sick at New York on his way with M.r Mr. Spencer to Hartford.

I now write in Ha&slong;t haste becau&slong;e because I would improve this opportunity of Conveyance to you — pray let me know as soon a as po&slong;sible possible whether you comply with this propo&slong;al proposal or not. and if you conclude to go let me know what your pre&slong;ent present nece&slong;sities necessities are and what will be nece&slong;sary necessary to advance at pre&slong;ent present .

If you go it will be be&slong;t best you Should have a Recommendation from the Rev.d Rev. M.r Mr. Pomeroy as well as from me, & and from any other Gentlemen of Character who are known in tho&slong;e those Provinces as you are not un&slong;en&slong;ible insensible of the Reports which have gone abroad of you
