Letter Occom relates the visit of an English gentleman, who told him that the Indians at Oneida are disaffected towards Mr. Kirtland and are not all attending his ministry. Occom's handwriting is informal yet clear and legible. Single sheet has been reinforced with a paper overlay that makes it difficult to gauge the condition of the paper; it appears to be in good condition, with light staining, creasing and wear. Brown ink is slightly dimmed by paper overlay. An editor, likely 19th-century, has added the note “Mohegan” to the trailer on one verso. Another unknown editor has added the note “Occom” in pencil. Neither of these notes have been included in the transcription. The signature is abbreviated.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.
