Letter Shattock writes that the Trustees appointed by the Rhode Island General Assembly have decided to sell enough of the Narragansetts’ land to pay their Sachem Ninegret’s debts. Formal handwriting is clear and legible. The handwriting is the same as on 765566.1, 767115.1, 767552, 767559, 767562.2, 767660.2, and possibly 767231 and 767251. It is likely that of Edward Deake, schoolmaster at Charlestown. It is occcasionally difficult to decipher whether superscript punctuations are periods or underlines. Large single sheet is in good condition, with light staining, creasing and wear. Bold black.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

I receiv'd received Yours of the 9.th 9th Instant in Six days after date, & and shall Indeavour endeavour to send ye the Boys according to your desier desire . — When I shall return to my Study I can't tell at pre&slong;ent present . The general A&slong;sembly Assembly , at their last Se&slong;sions sessions appointed five Trustees, & and past an Act, that there shall be as much of our Land sold, as will remit y.e the Sachems debts, & and cost of Conveyance, which in my apprehen&slong;ion apprehension will ruin ye the Tribe. — That our Tribe In&slong;ists insists upon my go‐ ing to England for redre&slong;s redress , & and have furnish'd furnished me with wri‐ tings for ye the purpose; but whether we can raise money suf‐ ficient I can't tell: the want of that may prove a final stop to us. If we can't raise it among our&slong;elves ourselves bettween between this & and Spring, I'll try if my Friends abroad will com‐ mi&slong;erate com‐miserate our case; if not we must give ye the point up.

I've Inform'd informed my Brethren, that you have so far commi‐ &slong;erated commi‐serated our Case as to say, that if we cou'd could do no better You wou'd would Send our Ca&slong;e case to ye the Earl of Dartmouth Your‐ &slong;elf your‐self , which greatly won the affection of our People: yet they chuse choose (if po&slong;sible possible ) to compleat complete their de&slong;ign design without burdening their Friends too much. — If we can do no more, we Shall try to Secure what we are in po&slong;sion possession of, & and dispose of ye the Same, & and Imbrace embrace Sr Sir William's offer. Since we have had Incouragement encouragement from Gentlemen in other Govern‐ ments, ye the Indians that Stands for ye the Sachem rages dred‐ fully dread‐fully , especially mr Mr. Garret ('tis Strange that a man Shou'd should hate his friends!) however his Influance influence is but small among us. — As I tho't thought 'twas best for Moley Molly to return, have advis'd advised her too, & and Suppo&slong;e suppose She will. — Her be‐ havior has been commendable Since She has been down.

I told Charles's Father you tho't thought 'twas best for Charles to live with a good Farmer a year or too two , which Seem'd seemed to affront them, that they wont send him again; not‐ with&slong;tanding not‐withstanding I told them he wou'd would continue a member of ye the School, & and afterwards learn a good Trade if it Suited him.
