In mine to You Mr Mr. Keen & and M.r Mr. Whitaker of 2d 2nd & and 3.d 3rd ult.o ultimo which I tru&slong;t trust y.o you ha' have &slong;een seen I informd informed You y.t that I had Sent my Son into the Wilderne&slong;s Wilderness . he returnd returned from his long & and fatiguing Tour 25th 25th ulto ultimo the Copy of Sir William John&slong;on Johnson 's Letter enclo&slong;ed enclosed Sufficiently expre&slong;ses expresses the Tenor of his Di&slong;cour&slong;e discourse with my Son — on which My Son thought proper not to attempt to collect y.e the Schools, or ingage engage Mi&slong;sionaries missionaries 'till 'til &slong;ir Sir John John&slong;on Johnson 's Return, or till 'til we could hear further hear of the Affair of Mi&slong;sionaries missionaries from Home. The following is an Ab&slong;tract abstract of my Son's Journal from thence to Onoida Oneida viz;; Sept.r September 9th 9th reachd reached Thomp&slong;on's Thompson's y.e the le&slong;t last Engli&slong;h English Inhabitant on this Side M.r Mr. Kirtlands. 10.th 10th Thur&slong;day Thursday — here find Indians Settling the Bounds of Lands as I was inform'd informed which , &slong;ir Sir William had bought of them for &slong;ir Sir Henry Moore, & and other Gentlemen in N. New York — many of them were Drunk, but on hearing my Name they treated me with di&slong;tingui&slong;hing distinguishing marks of Re&slong;pect respect . — I hired an Indian Ladd lad to conduct me 36. miles thro' through the Woods to M.r Mr. Kirtlands — a very wet Day and no House for refre&slong;hment refreshment — reach M.r Mr. Kirtlands abo.t about 6 o'Clock in y.e the Evening — was agreably agreeably Surprized surprised to find his Situation amid&slong;t amidst Such a Number of Hutts huts , and to See y.e the Active Appearance of So many Souls — and though Wett wet & and much tired, could Scarce find Time to Shift my Cloths clothes , or take Refre&slong;hment refreshment , the Sound of my Arival arrival being Soon Spread thro' through the Whole Ca&slong;tle Castle . The Grey headed, middle aged youth & and Children flockd flocked in Swarms to wellcome welcome me their Father, the fle&slong;h flesh of their GrandGreat Father (for &slong;o so they termd termed it). And give me Gods Ble&slong;sing blessing and pray for one to be given them by me, (for Such were the Terms they used) I was complemented complimented with friendly Salutations of all kinds, and Such as appeard appeared hearty. — this throng held 'till 'til 9 O'Clock when M.r Mr. Kirtland told them I was weary & and wanted Re&slong;t rest — that they mu&slong;t must come tomorrow morning for God's News &c etc. — I found M.r Mr. Kirtland in high Spirits, full of Zeal, his whole Heart & and Soul engaged in his work — He has made provi&slong;ion provision for a comfortable Sub&slong;i&slong;tance subsistence thro' through the winter, for which he is none in Debt. his Pro&slong;pects prospects of Succe&slong;s success Among them are great & and increa&slong;ing increasing — many added to his Congregation — there are now upwards of 80 families — there were five new Hutts huts then in building — & and M.r Mr. Kirtland told me he expected 1210. or 1512. more this fall — 11th 11th friday — I was rou&slong;ed roused from my Blankett blanket this morning by the Indians who wanted to know whether I was Sick or Well — and impatient to See me by the Day light daylight — after Brakefa&slong;t breakfast I walked with M.r Mr. Kirtland thro' through the Town, we calld called at every House that we might not give offence, and had all the Re&slong;pect respect &slong;hewn shown me in their Power.— M.r Mr. Kirtland had heard of my being on the Road and le&slong;t lest I Should not extend my Journey further than the Mohocks Mohawks , had Sent 3 of their Boys & and one Girl forward the Day before to meet me at Buttlers‐‐burrough. (one of these Boys was y.e the Son of Gawke their Cheif Chief who died the Spring before la&slong;t last , & and when he was dying left charge with his Queen to Send her Children to be in&slong;tructed instructed at this School as Soon as they were old Enough) — the Queen his mother Sat set out with them under the Care of David Fowler (whom my father had Sent for to take care of his Aged & and Suffering Parents & and teach a School at Muntauck Montauk ) at fort Stanwix they lo&slong;t lost one of their Hor&slong;es horses —#on which the Queen & and two of the Boysher Son with y.e the Girl went forward with David returned her Son with the Girl went forward with David. She came direct &slong;he she hearing that I And Seem va&slong;tly vastly plea&slong;ed pleased to &slong;ee see me. I a&slong;ked asked the Children if they would go & and come with y.e the Boys direct to M.r Mr. Kirtlands with y.e the Boys, tho' though they were fatigued & and wet to y.e the Skin Seemd va&slong;tly vastly plea&slong;d pleased to &slong;ee see me I a&slong;kd asked the Children if they wo.d #on which the Queen and two of the ye the Boys returned her Son & and the Girl went forward with David. before the Queen came to town &slong;he she heard that I was come, and tho' though wetto wet to the Skin & and fatigued with her travil travel , She came direct to M.r Mr. Kirtlands with the Boys, to &slong;ee see me and Seemd seemed va&slong;tly vastly plea&slong;d pleased y.t that y.a they were come. I a&slong;ked asked the Boys if they would go with me tomorro tomorrow morning with me tomorrow morning, they con&slong;ented consented to it with the greate&slong;t greatest Chirfulne&slong;s cheerfulness & and Seeming eagerne&slong;s eagerness to be on y.e the way — 12. Saturday —. this morning hired a Boy to carry a letter after David to Stop him at y.e the Mohock Mohawk Ca&slong;tle Castle till 'til I & and y.e the other Boys Shod should come up with them— And another to looke look the Hor&slong;e horse that was lo&slong;t lost — And another to carry a Belt of Wampum to the Indian Cheif Chief at Old Onoida Oneida (where they have never had an Engli&slong;h English Mi&slong;sionary missionary or School Ma&slong;ter schoolmaster ) de&slong;iring desiring Him to come & and hear my Me&slong;sage message — the 1.st 1st & and 2d 2nd of these Boys effected their De&slong;ign design — the 3d 3rd returned with a ye the Belt Same Belt of friend&slong;hip friendship with this me&slong;sage message y.t that he was then labouring under a fit of y.e the Feaver fever & and ague but wod would wait on me the next Day at 12 o'Clock. — I have not yet Spoke with Jacob who went Home on a vi&slong;it visit la&slong;t last Spring, by my Fathers leave, but through the Influence of his bad Aunts, has much out Stayed outstayed his Time — I have Seen him Several Times but have treated him and his Family with Slight — Spent the Day with M.r Mr. Kirtland in Settling the Affair of his School — they ingaged engaged to Send 28 Children at lea&slong;t least — many of whom have made laudible laudable Proficiency already under David Fowler.— at Evening I attended their Singing Meeting and was Surprized surprised at the Profeciency proficiency they have made at which they Sang Several Sacred Hymns in their own Language which M.r Mr. Kirtland has made & and Set to mu&slong;ick music — and as &slong;oon soon as he can have lei&slong;ure leisure for it he de&slong;igns designs to tran&slong;late translate a Number of P&slong;alms Psalms & and Sacred Hymns into Indian metre (in addition to a few they already have, which was done many years ago) and prepare them for the Pre&slong;s press — I found that I could ea&slong;ily easily have bro.t brought away — with me 9. 10ths 9/10ths of the Children of that Ca&slong;tle Castle if I would.— 13.th 13th . Lords Day — at 10 o'Clock y.e the Horn Sounded for meeting — on which I could not refrain from weeping at the Sight of Such a Swarm of Tawney tawny immortels immortals in their beggarly Habit flocking with &slong;uch such appearance of Zeal and eagerne&slong;s eagerness to their Long House longhouse for divine wor&slong;hip worship — a more Solomn solemn A&slong;sembly assembly I &slong;car&slong;ely scarcely ever Saw in my Life — M.r Mr. Kirtland tho' though I could not under&slong;tand understand him, appeard appeared to act the Indian Orator to perfection — the A&slong;sembly assembly heard with great Attention — the Queen Sat near me both parts of ye the Day, and wept at hearing the word — all parts of y.e the wor&slong;hip worship were performd performed with Great Decency— This morning a Cherockee Cherokee Indian, who was Sever.l several years ago taken captive by the Onoidas Oneidas , and adopted into one of their families to Supply the Place of one y.t that was killd killed in ye the War, came from uri&slong;kne Oriskany to Vi&slong;it visit me, and appeard appeared indeed like a babe in Chri&slong;t Christ , M.r Mr. Kirtland Hopes he is really converted, he had been Seeking a birth for him&slong;elf himself , wife, & and one Child, in this Town that they might Enjoy M.r Mr. Kirtlands Mini&slong;try ministry . In the Intermi&slong;sion intermission , on my return from Meeting I met the Cheif Chief of old Onoida Oneida according to his appointment accompanied by one of his Council— he Saluted me kindly. thanked me for Coming and hoped it would be for good to them — I delivered him the Belt with my Speech, by the Same Title of Bretheren Brethren which My Father had used in his Letter to them — and as it was the 3 d 3rd Time my Father had Sent to them (which acordg according to indian Cu&slong;tom custom is y.e the La&slong;t last ) I was full plain & and severe with them — I told them my Father had Sent once More, an offer of the Gospel to them, and it was the la&slong;t last Time they were to expect it from Him, And if they would not accept it, his hands were clear of their Blood, they mu&slong;t must take the Con&slong;equences consequences & and go to Hell in their own way.— I immediately ro&slong;e rose up & and went out as tho' I had done with them — They di&slong;cour&slong;d discoursed togather together about a quarter of an Hour, and after I was returned to ye the Room they Spake spoke to me — thanked me for coming — hoped the Hearts of their Tribe wod would come togather together — were very Sorry they had behaved So bad y.t that I co.d could not call them Children — Said they had con&slong;iderd considered my &slong;peech speech — that they Should for them&slong;elves themselves be glad if their Indians would accept the offer. they could Speak only for ym&slong;elves themselves and promi&slong;ed promised to Send his Grand&slong;on grandson which was ye the only one he could command — Said they would call the Tribe togather together the Next Day to hear my Me&slong;sage message — they thankd thanked my Father that he had Sent to them twice before — & and was very Sorry they had behaved So Ill that their Great father could not give them the Title of Children — I told them if they behaved well accepted of my Fathers Offer — treated mr. Kirtland well — Sent y.r their Children to School — & and behaved well till 'til Next Spring they Should have the Title of Children. About 9 o'Clock this Evening on one of the Council came in to a&slong;k ask forgivene&slong;s forgiveness for Jacobs Aunts for keeping him at Home — and to plead for him that he mig.t might return to School — they were afraid to come — I told him I had nothing to do in that Matter but with them — they were able to come and Speak for ym&slong;ls themselves — And when they were Sorry enough they wod would do it — and So Sent him off — 14 Monday — This morning gave orders advice to the Council of many things, viz to remove their School House schoolhouse to a Dry Place — to be kind to their Father — to keep their Promi&slong;e promise with Regard to drink — to Send their Children to School — attend the wor&slong;hip worship of God — &c etc. &c etc. all which they Promi&slong;ed promised to mind — they bro.t brought 6 of their Boys to Me whom I under&slong;tood understood to be of the cheif chief famities families in the place and urged me to take them — offerd offered to give them to me — two of ye the Boys cryed cried to comego with me, whom I paci‐‐fied with bitts bits of Silver— Jacobs two Aunts came and in a humble manner, and one of them with Tears a&slong;ked asked forgivne&slong;s forgiveness for detaining Jacob. they confe&slong;sd confessed their Ingratitude — prayd prayed me to take him & and do as I plea&slong;ed pleased with him — I appeard appeared carele&slong;s careless About his coming told them I did not want him I could get boys enough. If he had a mind to turn Indian again he might &c etc. — finally con&slong;ented consented he &slong;hould should come & and accordingly bro.t brought him with me. abo.t about 2 oClock took my leave of this Ca&slong;tle Castle — and an Affecting parting it was — Sat set off with Rev.d Rev. M.r Mr. Kirtland, Jacob and my two little Boys — reachd reached Old Onoida Oneida a little before Night— the Town, what of them were at Home had been togather together and had agreed to Supply a School with 14. Children which they can command be&slong;ides besides the Children of those that were abroad.— two famities families yet remain as inveterate haters of M.r Mr. Kirtland and his mea&slong;ures measures as ever. this is a Surpizing surprising change Since la&slong;t last Spring when there were but two or three of their Hutts huts y.t that M.r Mr. Kirtland tho't thought it Safe for him to go into. — they de&slong;ired desired me as my Father's Repre&slong;entative representative to order M.r Mr. Kirtland to preach to them half the time I told them they been So ungrateful, and behaved them Selves themselves So ba&slong;ely basely while their Bretheren Brethren at Kanwarohare Kanawalohale had received the Gospel, left of off their old vices and behaved So well, that they mu&slong;t must now be content with M.r Mr. Kirtland every 3.d 3rd Sabath Sabbath .— they thanked me for that and promi&slong;ed promised they wod would attend upon his preaching. they promi&slong;ed promised to Sendkeep their children toat School, and I promi&slong;ed promised to Send them a ma&slong;ter master in two months — The Enemies to this work on Every head &slong;ide side are very Numerous, their Friends very few, and their Temptations, and the opposition to it every way greater than can be ea&slong;ily easily conceived. I Sent a Me&slong;sage message to the Onondages Onondagas , and di&slong;ired desired M.r Mr. Kirtland to accom‐‐pany it with a Belt, in my Fathers Name, that I was there on Such an Errand and expected to come into those parts again Next Spring, and if they De&slong;ired desired it I would make y.m them a vi&slong;it visit & and give them ye the offer they might to have a Mi&slong;sionary missionary & and School Ma&slong;ter schoolmaster Sent Among them.— the old School The Mohocks Mohawks I under&slong;tood understood by di&slong;cour&slong;ing discoursing with individuals were willing have a Mi&slong;siony missionary & and School Ma&slong;ter schoolmaster &slong;ent sent among them, but as Sir William was Expecting Supplies from Europe I tho't thought be&slong;t best to do nothing in with them for the pre&slong;ent present . — I invited the Queen before mentioned to make a vi&slong;it visit here next Spring — & and &slong;ee see for her&slong;elf herself & and de&slong;ired desired M.r Mr. Kirtland to chu&slong;e choose a meet per&slong;on person to accompany her. She was plea&slong;d pleased with the proposal. M.r Mr. Kirtland E&slong;teems esteems her a virtuous woman, and hopes &slong;he she is become a real Chri&slong;tian Christian . She is much Re&slong;pected respected and her influence is great among the Nations." thus far my Sons Acco.t account By the accot account of my Son's and by ye the Copy of M.r Mr. Kirtlands Letter of a few Days earlier Date which I enclo&slong;e enclose , you &slong;ee see , Much- Hond honoured Sirs, how gloriou&slong;ly gloriously the Pro&slong;pect prospect open opens in that Quarter and of what importance it is to lay clo&slong;e close Seige siege to that part. that dear man of God M.r Mr. Kirtland, and the School Ma&slong;ters schoolmasters in those Towns mu&slong;t must be Supported, so that they may devote them&slong;elves themselves wholly to their work let the co&slong;t cost be what it will, and it mu&slong;t must nece&slong;sarily necessarily be great, and if it be £300 Sterling a year (and I don't expect it can be Done for much le&slong;s less till 'til he can rai&slong;e raise his Provi&slong;ions provisions there) there is no cau&slong;e cause of grudging to regrett regret it Since he is doing more for Chri&slong;t Christ than perhaps Some Scores of Clergy men who live at Ea&slong;e ease , and have their £100 Sterlg sterling per An. annum — I am now Sending M.r Mr. Phin.s Phineas Dodge a pious young man, & and Joseph John&slong;on Johnson a mohegan Indian who was an usher in that School La&slong;t last Year, and who has in a good Mea&slong;ure measure made him&slong;elf himself ma&slong;ter master of that Language to keep the School at Old Onoida Oneida according to my &slong;ons sons appointment— I have also advi&slong;ed advised M.r Mr. Kirtland to hire a faithful Labourer to get their Wood, take care of their Hor&slong;es horses , fetch their Provi&slong;ions provisions &c etc. &c etc. that their Time might not be half, or more con&slong;umd consumed in Such Service— But I have not heardhad a word from a Line from London &slong;ince since yours of March 23.d 23rd I have Sent many but know not whether they or my accots accounts have ever arived arrived you — I know not what acceptance My la&slong;t last Mea&slong;ures measures have found with you— but have this to comfort me under the mo&slong;t most gloomy Imaginations that I have hone&slong;tly honestly earne&slong;tly earnestly de&slong;ired desired & and hon&slong;tly honestly Endeavoured to Serve the cau&slong;e cause Redeemers cau&slong;e cause to the Utmo&slong;t utmost of my Power. and am not only approved by my own Con&slong;cience conscience but I have the Univer&slong;al universal Approbatn approbation of all the wi&slong;e wise and Good who are acquainted with my Conduct Plans & and the mea&slong;ures measures I have taken in Exerting them.
