Four Days ago M.r Mr. Kirtland arrived hHis State of Health is better than it was — he &slong;eems seems at la&slong;t last fully convinc'd convinced y.t that he mu&slong;t must , for a while, abate of his Labours & and Fatigues, or soon quit y.e the whole Service.

The Acco.t account he gives, is, in y.e the main, very agreable agreeable ; Tthat the Indians of that Town are almo&slong;t almost univer&slong;ally universally attachd attached to him — can't bear a word of his leaving them — they have made great Proficiency in the Schools in Reading & and Singing — of the latter he Says, I cant Speak too well — it is quite beyond what any will conceive, unle&slong;s unless they could hear them — he Says, he hears no Such Singing in the Country. — they carry three parts with great exactne&slong;s exactness — And many of them yet eager to improve further in the Art — This is all New, and beyond what was ever yet known among Indians — many of them Say, they never knew Such Plea&slong;ure pleasure before — that it is worth while worthwhile to be chri&slong;tians Christians , if they had nothing more by it, than the Plea&slong;ure pleasure of Singing Prai&slong;es praises to God — And to a&slong;si&slong;t assist them further M.r Mr. Kirtland has already begun, & and de&slong;igns designs to go on, to tran&slong;late translate Psalms & and Sacred Hymns into their Language, and fit them to Tunes — This is Surprizing surprising and affecting to Some, that come among them, from foreign Tribes — At pre&slong;ent present there is a great Reformation among them as to their Morals#— there have been no more than two drunk belonging to that Town, Since Dec.r December 15th 15th & and one of them was the only one of that Town, who oppo&slong;ed opposed M.r Mr. Kirtlands Mea&slong;ures measures — on that Day M.r Mr. Kirtland ( after #at pre&slong;ent present a li&slong;tening listening Ear to y.e the word preachd preached , thougthfulne&slong;s thoughtfulness and real concern about their Salvn salvation appears in a con&slong;iderable considerable Number (after many insucce&slong;sful unsuccessful attempts to put a Stop to that vice) calld called the Town togather together , & and told them, if they would all of them, men & and women, Old & and Young, agree, & and Solomly solemnly ingage engage to leave of their Drunkene&slong;s drunkenness , and enable him, to put Such Determination in Execution, by appointing 6 or 8. of their cheif chief men to be with, him & and a&slong;si&slong;t assist him therein, with full power to Seize all intoxicating Liquor, and di&slong;troy destroy it, or di&slong;pose dispose of it as he &slong;hould should think proper, he would tarry with them; otherwi&slong;e otherwise , he would leave them. Hereupon after 4 Days Con&slong;ideration consideration , they unanimou&slong;ly unanimously appointed 8, whom M.r Mr. Kirtland No‐minated, who have been very Officious, & and faithful in the affair. And the Succe&slong;s success of this Step has been Such, that, notwith&slong;tanding notwithstanding about 80 caggs kegs or ca&slong;ks casks of Rum have Since that Time been carried through that Town, & and offer'd offered to Sale, and in a number of In&slong;tances instances offerd offered freely, as a pre&slong;ent present , and their Acceptance Strongly urged, yet they have Never in one In&slong;tance instance been pre‐vaild pre‐vailed upon to Accept it: Steadily replying, when urged to it, "It is contrary to the mini&slong;ters minister's word, and our agreement with him." A Number have publickly publicly made Confe&slong;sion confession of their pa&slong;t past Drunkene&slong;s drunkenness , & and other Vices. — aAnd to two in prticular particular , above the re&slong;t rest , M.r Mr. Kirtland Hopes, God has granted Repentance unto Life.

This has had a very different Effect upon the Indians of Old Onoyada Oneida , where M.r Mr. Kenne Kinne was Sent la&slong;t last &slong;pring spring but left them for want of Health (as I informd informed you) Two of the principal men of that Town have removed to live under M.r Mr. Kirtlands In&slong;truction instruction . the re&slong;t rest of the Town are generally in oppo&slong;tion opposition to the Reformation begun, and to Mr Mr. Kirtland as the In&slong;trument instrument of it — The Enmity is So great, that near Relations as Brothers & and Si&slong;ters sisters hant have not vi&slong;ited visited oneanother one another , &slong;ince since the afor&slong;d aforesaid Agreement. — a Number of that Town have been trying every Artifice to overthrow, & and prevent the progre&slong;s progress of, the Reformation; on which acco.t account M.r Mr. Kirtland de&slong;igns designs , after a very Short vi&slong;it visit to return him&slong;elf himself , and not tru&slong;t Trust the Affair with any otherto a Stranger/ I take this Acco.t account from his own mouth.

The School there has been well conducted, under David Fowler — and Since David has got his wife there it is Something better living — M.r Mr. Kirtland Says that the Charge of tran&slong;porting transporting Pro‐vi&slong;ions pro‐visions , be&slong;ides besides his own Fatigues about it, has been fully equal to the fir&slong;t first co&slong;t cost of them. I have used the utmo&slong;t utmost caution & and Prudence as to Expences expenses . and the Same Frugality in my own family as I used when you was acquainted with it. The Mi&slong;sionaries missionaries & and SchoolMa&slong;ters schoolmasters have also, So far as I can find, been prudent. dear M.r Mr. Kirtland, I think, has, to a fault, been cautious of Expending chri&slong;ts Christ's money for his own comfort. he has also provided for David & and his wife, and Jo&slong;eph Joseph John&slong;on Johnson all this year in that Savage Country; and finds him&slong;elf himself often obliged to do Something for the poor Starved wret‐ches, when they come to See him. And ble&slong;sed blessed be God, he is now animated with the Hopes of a glorious Harve&slong;t harvest among them by & and by. may divine Grace & and mercy to the poor Creatures, exceed his mo&slong;t most Sanguine Expectations.

You know I had run Several hundred Pounds in the rere rear , before you went away, I used to take Goods for the School upon my own Credit, and charge them to the School as it wanted them. by this means my public accots accounts appeard appeared as they did. but this year I have taken Goods, in part of pay, for the Bills I have drawn, and have also paid those arears arrears with them, by which means my Debt is become due to the School, So that my next public acco.t accounts will appear in a view which I &slong;hould should not chuse choose . viz. a con&slong;i‐‐derable consi‐derable Ballance balance due to the School, while I Shall have nothing in my Hands, I am not anxious in the Affair, I tru&slong;t trust all will come right by, & and by. — The conduct of Divine Providence towards the towards this whole affair, appears to be a continued Series of Wi&slong;dom wisdom , & and Goodne&slong;s goodness . oh! how great the Depth! how large the VolumeIs! how Sweet! how Safe! how Ble&slong;sed blessed to tru&slong;t trust in him. I rejoyce rejoice much to hear of Gen.l Gen. Lymans Good pro&slong;pects prospects , his moral Character has been much Traduced of late in this Country He is repre&slong;ented represented as a Debaucher — that he is married in England & and devoted to Plea&slong;ure pleasure &c etc. It wod would be very friendly if yo you wod would to wipe off that Reproach by a Line —
