Handwriting is formal and clear. Large sheet folded to make four pages is in mostly good condition, with a significant tear around the seal, which is wholly preserved. This tear results in a slight loss of text. Dark brown.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

With much Duty & and Reverence I embrace this Oppertunity opportunity , to inform you, that by the Indulgence of a kind Providence I reach'd reached this Place the 23.d 23rd last Month, went immeadietly immediately into David's School, where the Scholers scholars , the poor ignorant Creatures chearfully cheerfully A&slong;sembled Assembled . I was very agreeably &slong;irpriz'd surprised at the proficancy proficiency of the Scholers scholars , their unwearied Labour in Study, & and the good Order, Sobriety & and Reverence which I think is natural to them. & and which they exerci&slong;e exercise e&slong;pecially especially in School—

We have been treated &slong;ince since our Arrivel arrival with &slong;uch such kindne&slong;s kindness as I never epxpected to receive from Inhabitents inhabitants of this part of the World. &slong;carce scarce a Day has gone over our Heads, but we have brought in to us fre&slong;h fresh Meat of &slong;ome some kind or other. Tho Though we live &slong;omthing something dirty, for want of Hou&slong;e House nece&slong;saries necessaries , & and al&slong;o also for want of knowledge to u&slong;e use tho&slong;e those we have, yet I hope we &slong;hall shall live a little cleaner, & and that very &slong;oon soon by the help of David's fifth Ribb, M.r Kirtland &slong;ett set out to Day today for S.r Sir W.ms William's he pa&slong;s'd passed by here yesterday, in his way home from Detroit O&slong;swego Oswego . Yesterday, (Lords Day) M.r Mr. Kirtland preach'd preached two Sermons, to the Indians, but the Interpreter, made out but poorly by rea&slong;on reason of his Age, and his unaquaintedne&slong;s unaquaintedness of Onoida Oneida Languge language , (he being a Tu&slong;karooroak Tuscarora . Who was &slong;uppo&slong;'d supposed to be converted &slong;ome some Years agone ago )— But the Indians are very de&slong;irous desirous to be taught— and expre&slong;s express hartly hearty & and numberle&slong;s numberless thanks to M.r Mr. Wheelock and tho&slong;e those good Ministers, who are hartely heartily engaged for their good &c etc. &c &c. etc. I hope God de&slong;igns designs to make this People a happy, and florishing flourishing People— they want nothing but the knowledge of our Lord & and Saviour Je&slong;us Jesus Christ to make them Christains christians — I am put to a great deal of Difficulty in School in not having their Language so that I might talk to the Scholers scholars — I long to be able to conver&slong;e converse with the poor Creatures in their Language— to teach & and in&slong;truct instruct them what little I know in the things of Religion— I hope before I return, to git get a little &slong;patter spatter of it—

The Indians are very de&slong;irous desirous of &slong;chooling schooling Their Children— one instance in particular, as I was &slong;etting setting in School (held in the Church) I &slong;aw saw an Indian Man bringing his little Son to School with a Rod of Correction in one Hand and a Boy on the other &slong;ide side to lead him along, and he proves to a very &slong;tudious studious Lad got his four & and twenty Letters in four Days—
