Whitaker's hand is formal and clear. It is occasionally difficult to differentiate between the letters “e” and “i” — in these instances the transcriber has used the correct spelling. Large single sheet is in good-to-fair condition, with light-to-moderate staining, creasing and wear. There is some light repair work on a particularly heavy crease. Black-brown. The signature is abbreviated.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

We have had a plea&slong;ant pleasant & and odd farce here ye&slong;terday yesterday Night before la&slong;t last , notes were Set up about town requiring mr Mr. Oliver to appear at ye the tree of Liberty in order publick­ly publicly to renounce his Commi&slong;&slong;ion commission of Stamp Ma&slong;ter Master , which he had recd received Since the former mob; on this the Secretary Sent to the maje&slong;trates magistrates & and principle merchants to waite wait on him & and protect him from in&slong;ult insult ; accordingly they went ye&slong;terday yesterday in the rain to a certain hou&slong;e house , where Governer Governor Mackenta&slong;h MacIntosh appointed, & and there mr Mr. Oliver renounced his commi&slong;&slong;n commission before the Maje&slong;trates magistrates & and Merchts. merchants to their Sati&slong;faction satisfaction , judging that his honour was Sufficient to Sati&slong;fy satisfy the world that he would not act — where on the writ­ing in which he renounced his commi&slong;&slong;ion commission was Sent into another room to be approved by Gov.r Gov. Mackenta&slong;h MacIntosh ; & and he Saw fit to declare it would not do unle&slong;s unless he would walk to the tree of liberty & and Sware swear to it under S.d said tree before the people. & and his Sovereign Mandates was immediate obeyed, & and the Se­cretary, Maje&slong;trates magistrates & and Merch.ts merchants walked in the Storm of rain near half a mile in S obediance obedience to his Excellency's Com.d command — So things Seem to be quiet — Cap.t Capt. Scot came in 7 weeks from London la&slong;t last Sab: sabbath brings no letters from mr Mr. Smith who wrote & and sent by Cap.t Capt. Bruce a few days before. He tells me that it Seems to be the general talk of genlle­men gentlemen at home, that it will never do to put the Stamp act From M.r Mr. Whitaker Dec.r December 18. 1765 Bo&slong;ton Boston . into execution — If the weather favours we Shall Sail tomorrow or Saturday — One mr Mr. John Williams of this town goes withs with us. He is going home to Seek the Superintendency of In­dian affairs in Canady Canada , & and tis likely he will obtain it; & and if he does he Says he will give 5 or 600 per. An: annum yto your de&slong;ign design He is a lover of good things & and a generous gentleman, I wi&slong;h wish we may help him in this affair — I can't but think he may be a great ble&slong;&slong;ing blessing — his wife is a pious woman; & and I hope he is not void of religion —

What the de&slong;ign design of providence is in detaining us here I can't tell, but I believe & and tru&slong;t trust that all is for the be&slong;t best — Mr Mr. Occom is well, & and I am hitherto much plea&slong;ed pleased with his conduct he behaves with great mode&slong;ty modesty & and caution — he is noticed not in­vited to preach by any mini&slong;ter minister in town except mr Mr. Morehead but he does not re&slong;ent resent it — I have preached 5. or 6 evenings every week, or thereabouts, Since I have been here, & and never Saw people more attentive & and ready to crowd to gather together , except in times of awakening — I have not preached in publick public on a week day except the thir&slong;day Thursday lecture la&slong;t last week —
