Unknown hand is clear and legible. Large sheet folded in half to make four pages is in good condition, with light staining, creasing and wear. One recto has a note attached to it, reading: "Keep the Letters of this date in this order." Given the type and condition of the paper, it is likely that this note is not contemporary. Black-brown. There are no signatures. This document is likely a copy.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

Upon a public and loud Clamour of the Revd Rev. Mr Mr. Sam&slong;on Samson Occom’s Mi&slong;conduct misconduct in a Number of In&slong;tances instances relative to the Separations in and about Mohegan, and ill Conduct towards the Over&slong;eers overseers in the Affair of lea&slong;ing leasing the Indian Lands, and &slong;ome some proud and haughty Threatnings threatenings to turn Epi&slong;copalian Episcopalian , and Un&slong;ettledne&slong;s unsettledness re&slong;pecting respecting the Con&slong;titution constitution of our Churches and Infant Bapti&slong;m Baptism , and di&slong;re&slong;pectful disrespectful Treatment of the Revd Rev. Mr Mr. Jewet Jewett , and illegal proceedings again&slong;t against the School Ma&slong;ter schoolmaster at Mohegan, and engaging in the Ma&slong;on Mason Controver&slong;y Controversy (so called) against the Government: And the Glory of God, Mr Mr. Occom’s Character and U&slong;efulne&slong;s usefulness , and particularly, the Reputation of Indian Affairs, requiring that the&slong;e these Reports &slong;hould should be publickly publicly looked into, that his Innocence or Guilt therein might thereby publickly publicly appear: Wherefore, the Revd Rev. M.r Mr. Jewet Jewett , at the De&slong;ire desire of &slong;ome some of this Board, exhibited a Charge, con&slong;i&slong;ting consisting of a Number of Articles, again&slong;t against the &slong;aid said Mr Mr. Occom: which were deliberately heard with Evidences and Pleas on both Sides. And upon mo&slong;t most carefully weighing the whole Controver&slong;y controversy , Mr Mr. Occom was not found guilty of any of the Charges laid again&slong;t against him, excepting that of the Ma&slong;on Mason Controver&slong;y Controversy ; in which he was blamed only agreeable to the Tenor of what follows.

“Although, as a Member of the Mohegan Tribe, and, for many Years, one of their Council, I thought I had not only a natural and civil Right, but that it was my Duty, to acquaint my&slong;elf myself with their temporal Affairs

Affairs; Yet I am, upon &slong;erious serious and clo&slong;e close Reflexion reflection , con‐ vinced, that as there was no ab&slong;olute absolute Nece&slong;sity necessity for it, it was very imprudent in me, and offen&slong;ive offensive to the Public, that I &slong;hould &slong;o should so far engage, as, of late, I have done, in the Ma&slong;on Mason Controver&slong;y Controversy : which has injured my Ministerial Charac‐ ter, hurt my U&slong;efulne&slong;s usefulness , and brought Di&slong;honour dishonour upon Mr Mr. Wheelock’s School and the Corre&slong;pondents Correspondents . For this imprudent, ra&slong;h rash , and offen&slong;ive offensive Conduct of mine, I am heartily &slong;orry sorry , and beg Forgivene&slong;s forgiveness of God — of this honou‐ rable Board of Corre&slong;pondents Correspondents , of whom I ought to have asked farther Advice— and of the Public; determining, that I will not for the future act in that Affair, unle&slong;s unless called thereto and obliged by lawful Authority.”

This Submi&slong;sion submission , being offered to this Board, by the Revd Rev. Mr Mr. Occom, was accepted.

Moreover, Mr Mr. Occom de&slong;ired, that a Copy of the Letter which the Revd Rev. Mr Mr. Jewet Jewett wrote to the Commi&slong;sioners Commissioners at Bos&slong;ton Boston &slong;ome time sometime la&slong;t last Fall, in which he thinks there are &slong;everal several Things injurious to his Character, might be laid before this Board. Which being read and con&slong;idered considered , the Board are of Opinion, that it is Mr Mr. Jewet Jewett ’s Duty, in Ju&slong;tice justice to Mr Mr. Occom’s Character, to write &slong;aid said Commi&slong;sioners Commissioners of the Satisfaction which he now profe&slong;ses professes to have received from Mr Mr. Occom’s Defence defense ; and that a Copy of &slong;aid said Writing &slong;hould should be laid before this Board at their next Meeting for their Approbation. Which Mr Mr. Jewet Jewett agreed to do.
