Formal handwriting is small, yet clear and legible. Single sheet is in good condition, with light-to-moderate staining, creasing and wear. Black-brown. Woolley writes a follow-up letter on the same day (manuscript 765159.2), alluding to a change in plans. The identity of the Sachem to whom Woolley refers is uncertain, and so he has been left untagged. The identity of the Master to whom Woolley refers is uncertain, and so he has been left untagged.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

Good Peter has now made ready to go to N. New Eng‐‐land with four Boys, two Mohawks Boys & and two Tu&slong;karora Tuscarora Boys, and he is afraid you are mo&slong;t most out of Patience in waiting this long. He has made all po&slong;sible possible Ha&slong;te Haste for their March, soon after we heard, that Peace is &slong;ettled settled among the Nations; & and hardly had a Time to smoak smoke a Pipe, as he calls it.

Small-Pox has prevents my coming home this Time — I hear it is in Albany and about tho&slong;e those Towns where I know must ne&slong;ce&slong;sarily necessarily &slong; s Pa&slong;s pass . Two of tho&slong;e those Boys have never had it, and they are mind to go &slong;eeing seeing , they can lie out better than I. can Furthermore, they have a cair care for me, Ina&slong;much inasmuch , as I am not yet well &slong;ea&slong;on'd seasoned to it.

I have lived with the Sachem almost three Months and have but yet a little Knowlede knowledge of their Language: but I have moved my Quarters to another Family by his Concent consent , for &slong;everal several Di&slong;advantages disadvantages , which, I cannot now Number.

I told the Sachem &slong;oon soon after I arrived here, that I had a mind to teach their Children to read and write in Enli&slong;h English , as long as I tarryed with them.— He made this Reply, — that they knew how to read and write in their own Language already, which is the &slong;ame same , but not the Same Tongue; and there is no Nece&slong;sity necessity of &slong;uch such Pains to be taken with us: Therefore he is not willing they should be taught any o‐‐ther Tongue be&slong;ides besides their own.

I am teaching three Young Men of the Dellaware Delaware Tribe, the one of which is half a Mohawk, the&slong;e these are de&slong;irous desirous to under&slong;tand understand the Engli&slong;h English Bible, and they have made a good Proficiency.

Sir, I have been well ever &slong;ince since I came, I have had no &slong;uch such ill Turns, as when I lived in Lebanon.— I have ran in Debt, att at Cherry-Vally Cherry Valley , one Blankit blanket one Pair of Engli&slong;h English Shoes and a little Soap, and three Dollers dollars in this Place, as I believe, I would have peri&slong;hed perished if I had not done thus, and I knew you love me more thatn that. Sir I have no more to &slong;ay say worthy of your Attention, but that Plea&slong;e Please Sir, to give my Duty to Mrs Mrs. Wheelock, to my kind Master, and Love to the Re&slong;t rest of the Family &c. etc. —
