Handwriting is not Wheelock's. It is formal, clear and legible; however, letter case is occasionally difficult to decipher. Single sheet is in good-to-fair condition, with light-to-moderate staining, creasing and wear. Light repairs have been made to the central crease. Brown. This document is likely a copy.

The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

I have lo&slong;t lost no Time &slong;ince since I received our Commi&slong;sion commission to prepare for M.r Mr. Occom's Mi&slong;sion mission . Last Friday Evening I received the Vote of the London Commi&slong;sioners Commissioners in Bo&slong;ton Boston di&slong;charging discharging M.r Mr. Occom from their Service. On Saturday Morning I &slong;ent sent out to de&slong;ire desire the Committee & and M.r Mr. Occom to meet on Monday (i.e Ye&slong;terday yesterday ) when in Compliance with my Propo&slong;al proposal they unanimously agreed to &slong;end send M.r Mr. Occom as &slong;oon soon as may be into the Mohawk Country to teach & and preach as he &slong;hall shall have Opportunity as he pur&slong;ues pursues his Journey to Lake Ontario or further till 'til he meets General John&slong;on Johnson on his Return from Detroit, and before the Indians with him from di&slong;tant distant Tribes &slong;hall shall di&slong;per&slong;e disperse , in order to make them an Offer of Mi&slong;sionaries missionaries & and School Ma&slong;ters schoolmasters in the mo&slong;t most &slong;triking striking convincing & and inviting Manner, for we apprehend that the Countenance of the Mohawks, Oneidas, Tu&slong;caroraes Tuscaroras , & and &slong;uch such as are more knowing & and accquainted with the Affair together with Genl Gen. John&slong;on Johnson 's Approbation & and Recommendation will be the mo&slong;t most likely means to invite & and move others to make it the Object of their Attention. I al&slong;o also propo&slong;e propose he &slong;hall shall there recommend this School & and the De&slong;ign design of it, & and procure a Number of likely Boys & and Girls from Tribes as remote as may be for it.

We have al&slong;o also concluded to &slong;end send David Fowler the &slong;enior senior Youth in this School to accompany him in this Journey.

And if M.r Mr. C. J. Smith were within our Reach we &slong;hould should pre&slong;s press him hard to take the Journey with them. And we yet hope he is not &slong;o so far on his de&slong;igned designed Tour to the Southward, but that he may &slong;ea&slong;o‐nably seaso‐nably hear of it & and be inclined to go.

And this we have done only on the Credit of the great Redeemer without a Farthing in our Hands to &slong;upport support it, not doubting but by your Means, or &slong;ome some other Way it will be &slong;upported supported if he &slong;ees sees it to be be&slong;t best . they will need about £20. lawful Money.

And as M.r Mr. Occom has received Nothing for his Support &slong;ince since he came to Mohegan, & and could not attend on this Mi&slong;sion mission without &slong;ecuring securing Labour about his Building & and ingathering for the Winter, I have this Day given Bonds to pay the nece&slong;sary necessary Labourers which he &slong;hall shall employ in his Ab&slong;ences absences .

I have lately admitted to this School in order to be fitted for a Mi&slong;sion mission with others next Spring, M.r Mr. Titus Smith of Hadley of about 30 Years old who has fini&slong;hed finished his Learning at Yale College, & and expects the Honours of it next Month. He is a Man

of eminent Piety, a good Scholar, & and con&slong;iderably considerably u&slong;ed used to Indians, having been in &slong;everal several Campaigns to the Northward.

I have al&slong;o also another (one Chamberlain of the &slong;ame same Town) in my Eye, who is about 26 Years old, and of the &slong;ame same Character. He is ju&slong;t just entring entering his la&slong;t last Year at Yale College. He was taken Captive by the Indians when Fort William Henry was taken & and continued a Year in Captivity.

My Pro&slong;pects prospects are daily increa&slong;ing increasing . It looks as tho' though God had been laying out for this De&slong;ign design for many Years pa&slong;t past . and I tru&slong;t trust in him that he will not for&slong;ake forsake it.

I han't haven't yet obtained a Black&slong;mith blacksmith to my Mind, but have one in View who I hope will an&slong;wer answer my Purpo&slong;e purpose . And I am more & and more per&slong;waded persuaded of the Expediency of &slong;uch such a Device, and that Nothing will likely more recommend our Mi&slong;sionaries missionaries and School Ma&slong;ters schoolmasters to remote Nations than this Trade —

The Succe&slong;s success of Sir William's Tour hitherto marvellously marvelously in‐crea&slong;es in‐creases our Pro&slong;pects prospects . How &slong;weet sweet it is, my dear Sir, to live upon God, & and &slong;ee see him performing all to our Hand while we are Nothing & and have Nothing that is good of our own. How &slong;weets sweet is the Doctrine of God's Grace. I long to be a Chri&slong;tian Christian .

By him you may be informed of the &slong;tate state of my School Family &c etc. — No Time mu&slong;t must be lo&slong;t lost in fitting Mr Mr. Occom for his journey — And by Mr Mr. Kirtland Kirkland you mu&slong;t must &slong;end send directly back to me if there &slong;hall shall be Occa&slong;ion occasion for it & and no other Opportunity pre&slong;enting presenting . Give my Love to the Friends in Philadelphia &c etc. (and if you think be&slong;t best ) tell them I earne&slong;tly earnestly beg of them an Alms for Chri&slong;t Christ He is hungry, &slong;ick sick , in Pri&slong;on prison , naked & and barefoot; or rather his Nece&slong;s‐ities necess‐ities are greater than the&slong;e these , for his Heart is infinitely &slong;et set upon accompli&slong;hing accomplishing a De&slong;ign design which has already co&slong;t cost him his Life, than which nothing can more loudly call for their Liberality.
