The Occom Circle Project is a digital edition of letters from and to Samson Occom (1727-1792), with other of his works. The documents in question are all housed in Dartmouth College's Rauner Special Collections Library. Occom was a Mohegan Indian, intertribal leader, public intellectual, and the most important Indian writer in North America in the 18th century.

O our Drunken Sechem sachem has gone to mr Mr. Jewett with a number of Complaints against me, too numerous to mention, but as they are ba&slong;e base and unjust., I am resolved to have the whole tribe — call’d called , and all taken under the concideration consideration of mr Mr. Jewett & and Some other ministers, Esqr Esq. Adam’s Adams &c: etc. for I will not ly lie under his Calum = ‐ = ‐ ny being conscious to my Self myself , I am not only capable but faithfull faithful , and the fault of the desired Succee&slong;s success , shall ly lie at the right door; among other things he say’s says you said you wonderd wondered my Children did not profitt profit liek like yours. Sir can it be expected that Children can make such profitiancy proficiency , when they are mo&slong;tly mostly from school, runing running about under no Government, as Children that are keept kept under the masters care night and day, Sure I am you never would say so, as you have mentioned in your Narrative the Contrary: God who is the Searcher of hearts, &c etc. him I apeal appeal , that with sincerity & and faithfullne&slong;s faithfulness ( tho though with much weakne&slong;s weakness & and imperfection) I have discharged my Duty; I am capable to be of very great Service to this people if I meet with proper incouragement encouragement , But we have a Sechem sachem does much hurt, goes about beging begging Cyder cider & and Rum, geting getting drunk and lying all night in Barn’s barns , enticeing enticing & and Seting setting bad example before other / young / Indian’s indians , Going on contrary to all Councill council , advice, & and reproof, Bold in sin, & and trampling on the Laws of God and man, as if he were above Law, minding nothing that is good, all he is after, is the profits of Mohegan to consume upon his lusts; Some intimations are made that they want me out, in order mr Mr. Occum Occom (who is coming here to live), may keep School; It was but last spring mr Mr. Occum Occom told me that tho though he came to live in Mohegan, he would not take the School, but do all in his power to Support & and incourage encourage it, if so I shall rejoice at his coming, I must observe that the Sechem sachem formerly commended my faithfullne&slong;s faithfulness beyond mr Mr. Lethem at Nahantik Niantic & and any children that comes from there — on a vi&slong;itt visit , I can’t find reads near so well as mine; tho though Had I Children that would regularly attend, I would show what I could doe do , I Humbly Begg beg your answer and advice, May God preserve you, Bli&slong;s bless yr your valuable consort, & and make your Children ornaments & and u&slong;efull useful my Spou&slong;e spouse joins me in our regards to Madam Self & and Children
