The project to digitize the Enslavement Documents from the Wheelock Collection focuses not only on Wheelock’s role as a slave owner, but also documents his involvement with the institution of slavery as it existed in Colonial Connecticut. Slavery as an institution existed throughout colonial America, but its manifestations varied from region to region. This project attempts to cast light on Wheelock’s -- and Dartmouth’s -- roles in the institution of slavery, as well as bringing to light the lives of enslaved people represented in the collection and also providing additional materials to inform the scholarly study of slavery in New England.

Text conforms to "TEI in Libraries: Guidelines for Best Practices," level 4.

Yours of Feb.y February 24 before me replete with expreſions expressions & and evidences of Friendſhip, Friendship, Kindneſs, Kindness, pru= =dence and faithfulneſs, faithfulness, for all which I moſt most heartily thank you. As to the Negro of which you write I much want his help. & and it is difficult to supply that want at this Day without him, and I had fully concluded to have him, when I wrote you laſt last — but I have heard so much of their setting all Negros free — also the preſent present deſerted deserted & and needy circumſtances circumstances of this College, having no dependance dependence upon supply, from beyond the seas. And the wretched civil state of this Government in which we have not at preſent present Law or Honour enough to collect Debts. Makes me afraid to run such a venture as to Payment. And these are the only things. If you can anſwer answer these object==ions my way will be clear — If you will take it out in your sons education so far as that will go; and send others to take the reſt rest in that way I will take the Negro on the terms you mention viz £65.
