The project to digitize the Enslavement Documents from the Wheelock Collection focuses not only on Wheelock’s role as a slave owner, but also documents his involvement with the institution of slavery as it existed in Colonial Connecticut. Slavery as an institution existed throughout colonial America, but its manifestations varied from region to region. This project attempts to cast light on Wheelock’s -- and Dartmouth’s -- roles in the institution of slavery, as well as bringing to light the lives of enslaved people represented in the collection and also providing additional materials to inform the scholarly study of slavery in New England.

Your kind Favor 30th ult ultimate came to hand 17th 17th Instant. Mr Mr. Bingham suppoſes supposes yt that He sent you a meſsage message by Elihu Pomeroy later than your Letter & and that the cheeſe cheese is now upon the road, and if that be the caſe, case, and the Negro also with it, it is well. — If you have yet waited for my anſwer answer — I would have you procure the Cheeſe Cheese and send it along by the Negro if that may be done with safety, & and provided also I can make such remittance, as will well answer, I understand the money must be paid down for the cheeſe, cheese, I have no ex- pectation of getting the hard money, & and I am not quite certain of Paper, tho though I depend upon having it. and as to the Negro, I dont know when I shall be able to pay for him, as I am in no capa- city to collect a debt & and when our Wiſe Wise Men will order matters so that I may have justice in a courſe course of Law I cant can't tell, however I will well do the best I can. — I expect to stand in need of a Man & and Woman to take care of & and manage a Dairy of 20, or 30 Cows next Summer.
