The project to digitize the Enslavement Documents from the Wheelock Collection focuses not only on Wheelock’s role as a slave owner, but also documents his involvement with the institution of slavery as it existed in Colonial Connecticut. Slavery as an institution existed throughout colonial America, but its manifestations varied from region to region. This project attempts to cast light on Wheelock’s -- and Dartmouth’s -- roles in the institution of slavery, as well as bringing to light the lives of enslaved people represented in the collection and also providing additional materials to inform the scholarly study of slavery in New England.

Know all men by these preſents presents that we Timothy Kimbal Kimball of Coventry in the County of Windham and Eliſha Elisha Wales of Ashford in Said County for the Conſideration Consideration of a valuable Conſidration Consideration Received of Mr Mr. Eleazr Eleazar Wheelock of Lebanon in Said County have given granted bargained and ſold sold and by theſe these preſents presents do fully freely and abſolutely absolutely give grant bargain ſell sell & and Confirm unto him the Said Eleazr Eleazar Whelock Wheelock and to his hiers heirs and aſſign asſign for Ever a Certain negro man named ſeppey Seppey being the ſame same which sd said Kimbal Kimball bought of ſaid said Whelock Wheelock the 22nd 22nd day of April 1760 to have and to hold the Said negro man to him the ſaid said Whelock Wheelock his heirs &c etc. as a ſlave slave for Life against all Claims and demands whatſoEver whatsoever as witneſs witness our hand, & and ſeals seals this 27th 27th day of October 1761
