ITEM 1 Government Stands Idle - ASAHI SHIMBUN - 5 Jan 46. Translator: A. Kido.
Extract:
Regarding the Directive, a SCAP spokesman announced as follows: "It is a matter of
common knowledge that the would-be secret
societies played an important role in encouraging the Japanese aggression policy.
The Japanese military clique and
ultranationalists had always nursed and protected these secret societies. Some of
the Japanese Government and other public
officials had bravely resisted the will of such dominating parties, even at the risk
of their lives. The Japanese Government
did not take any proper counter-measures against this state of things, and SCAP has
issued the Directive in order to root out
such groups.
"By making public the records of such groups or societies, the Japanese people and
Government Officials will be in possession
of powerful weapons for building a liberal and democratic JAPAN. The present Directive
banishes all individuals and
organizations, who had placed an important role in encouraging Japanese people to
carry out warlike aggression, apart from the
big figures accused of being war criminal suspects. Since the removal of the restriction
on speech and press, the Japanese
people are demanding that their Government take measures similar to those taken by
General MACARTHUR."
