General note:

Originally a medieval farming village in West Yorkshire, northern England, Colton is now a suburb of the city of Leeds. In an arch letter to Whitaker, George Whitefield first reproves him for "paying court" to an unnamed person who, in Whitefield's opinion, threatens the "religious" nature of their cause. He then asserts, "Mr Occum should not got to Bath," a stylish spa frequented by fashionable people in the southwest of England, and says enigmatically, "Colton is a proper retirement for body and soul," meaning, perhaps, get as far away as you can from the society hot spots, Colton being in the far north of England.
